The former West Indies captain, currently on a tour to India with the West Indies team, shared invaluable insights on the importance of teamwork, collaboration, leadership and professionalism with JLL’s staff.

“I cannot thank Courtney enough for accepting my invitation to address our Mumbai staff,” said Anuj Puri, Chairman & Country Head, Jones Lang LaSalle India as he introduced the cricket legend. “As a real estate consultancy that holds the values of ethics, teamwork and professionalism as paramount, we can all benefit from this master strategist’s treasury or experience and wisdom.”

Neither good business nor outstanding cricket are products of chance. Both are the outcome of passion, proficiency and focus. Indian real estate is still a long way from being a level playing field, but professionals will always play a straight game. During the one-hour interaction, Courtney Walsh did indeed share inspiring and extremely motivating insights:

  • “You have to enjoy what you’re doing, or you will fail – on the field, or whatever your workplace is.”
  • “You will always pay the price of overconfidence.”
  • “The results you reap will always depend on the work you put in before, during and after.“
  • “When you are not selected for a task, assess yourself and see where you are lacking. Look at those who are succeeding. Don’t copy them, but incorporate their qualities in your own unique style.”
  • “Never do anything you find hard to live with later. Work hard, work fair and be ready for setbacks.”
  • “Always put the team first; do whatever the team requires. You are never bigger than the team.”
  • “Those who criticise you when they expect you to fail are usually the first to cheer you when you succeed instead. Never let criticism intimidate you.”
  • “The opportunity of leadership is an opportunity to become a best person you can be. It should never be anything else.”

In every incident on-field and off-field that Courtney recalled, his uncompromising belief in working hard, working honestly and working for the team shone through. So did his ability to turn short-term defeats into long-term victories.

“It was incredibly enriching to hear Courtney Walsh share is thoughts,” says Ramesh Nair, Managing Director – West India, Jones Lang LaSalle India. “It was easy to draw direct parallels between winning strategies in a tough match and what works in Indian real estate during turbulent times. I completely agree with his repeated emphasis on the importance of effective team mobilization, staying motivated and sticking to the rules to ensure fair play.”
