The proposal submitted by CREDAI is under the consideration of the Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee.

“The automated public toilet unit, ‘Delight,’ does not require any manual cleaning as it is fully mechanised,” said an official related to the project.

He said that the self cleaning system will take care of cleaning the toilet floor, too. Since the entire system is automatic, cleanliness is ensured throughout the operation of the system. Unlike the traditional toilets, e-toilets can generate income from daily usage collection and advertisement or sponsorship revenue.

“The advertisement revenue is the main income planned for the unit. The toilet unit has scrolling and revolving displays that match the international outdoor publicity standards and hence it will be easy to generate income,” said the official.

Regarding the working of the proposed units, the official said that it is fully automatic. There will be display boards in the toilet unit which show whether the unit is ‘busy’ or ‘free’.

If the unit is in the ‘busy’ mode it will not accept coins. If it is free, the user has to first drop the specified coin into the coin collection unit and switch on the button upon which an elector-magnetically controlled door will open. The flush system is also fully automatic.

The official said that the model is more cost-effective and water consumption is also less compared to the existing units. The Corporation Council is likely to consider the proposal in the next meeting.
